Though print media has suffered with the rise of online content, there are still many magazines on the market that feature content on a diverse array of topics and interests.
Magazines also publish a wide variety of content. No matter what subject youâre interested in writing about, be it science fiction, gaming, movies, horses, or extreme sports, chances are thereâs a magazine about it. The content can also take many different forms, from traditional stories and articles to interviews, personal experience pieces, reviews, commentaries, and travelogues (pieces that describe a travel experience or trip). You can choose to write about something youâre interested in and then try to sell your piece. Or you can examine a magazineâs list of themes for upcoming issues (usually found on the magazineâs website) and try to write something to fit a theme. Be sure to give plenty of lead time, as magazines are put together many months before they are actually published.
Magazines also have regular departments or features, but for a teen writer, getting one can be difficult to achieve.
The Magazine Market
If you are interested in developing a freelance writing career with magazines, where do you start? The first thing to do is make a list of magazines that publish writing by teens. You can find many of them online simply by searching for magazines that accept teen writing. You can also use a magazine market guide, available at your local library or bookstore. There are several of these: some are aimed at people who write for children and some are aimed at people who write for adults. Market guides for childrenâs writers usually have a section that specifically discusses markets for young writers.
Whatever guide you decide to use, read through the listings carefully. Note what each magazine publishes and whether it accepts work only from writers of a certain age. Some magazines are paying markets and some are not, so you must decide if youâre only willing to write for pay or if itâs more important to you to create a body of published work.
